Kokyo Japanese Restaurant

Kokyo's Japanese Restaurant in Burnaby is at the intersection of Lougheed Highway and North Road, in the Korean mini-mall on the south side. We've dined there often and the food is good, yet affordable. The service is prompt and you're given your privacy, in the little cubicles made of wood.

The best thing about Kokyo's menu is the availability of custom rolls, such as the caterpillar roll. The usual fare of Califrnoia rolls, yam rolls, avocado rolls, sashimi, gomai, unagi and tempura is of course present. These are delicious and served up quickly. Unlike many other Japanese places, there's usually no delay between the time your teacup is empty and its being refilled.

The staff are friendly and courteous. The bathrooms are clean and functional. I can't begin to recount how many places seem hospitable enough on the outside, with their bathrooms looking like an outhouse in war-torn Eritrea. These places can only be avoided until they conform to a more exacting standard of cleanliness. Luckily, Kokyo is not one of these and is to be lauded for its friendly ambience.

A small bonus is that it's within walking distance of the Lougheed skytrain station, should you be taking transit.

On the whole, 4.5 out of 5 stars. Highly recommended, and in fact, I think I'm going to go there tonight for dinner. Writing this review made me yearn for some sushi.

Bon appetit, my fellow omoichthyovores*.

* Omo - raw in Greek, ichthyos - fish in Greek, vores - eating in Latin.
